In Kairo wird die Müllbeseitigung von armen Kopten betrieben, die den Abfall der einzelnen Haushalte abholten. Glas und Metall werden wiederverwertet, die Essensabfälle verfütterten sie an ihre Schweine. Verfütterten. Im Mai nämlich kam die ägyptische Regierung auf die geniale Idee, eben diese Schweine zu keulen, um der Schweinegrippe vorzubeugen. Man darf getrost annehmen, dass dabei der Aspekt der Propaganda eine nicht unerhebliche Rolle spielte. Auf diesem Wege konnte schließlich gezeigt werden, dass die Regierung die Gefahr, die von unreinen Tieren ausgeht blitzschnell erkannt hat.
Jetzt bekommt Kairo die Folgen zu spüren. Die NYT berichtet:

Ramadan Hediya, 35, who makes deliveries for a supermarket, lives in Madinat el Salam, a low-income community on the outskirts of Cairo.
“The whole area is trash,” Mr. Hediya said. “All the pathways are full of trash. When you open up your window to breathe, you find garbage heaps on the ground.”

Today the streets of the zabaleen (Müllsammler, M.R.) community are as packed with stinking trash and as clouded with flies as ever before. But the zabaleen have done exactly what they said they would do: they stopped taking care of most of the organic waste.
